Upon arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be greeted by your driver-guide who will then take you on a scenic drive to Ndarakwai Ranch, located 74 kilometers away in the West Kilimanjaro region. This two-hour journey will showcase the stunning landscapes of West Kilimanjaro, where you might spot zebras and elephants, depending on the season. On clear days, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of both Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.
Upon reaching Olpopongi Maasai Village, you’ll be warmly welcomed by a group of Maasai and the Village Chief with refreshing beverages. You’ll then enjoy a traditional Maasai dinner and spend the night at the village, immersing yourself in the local culture.
After breakfast, spend a full day exploring the village and enjoying a walking safari. During your village tour, a personal Maasai guide will share insights into both the historical and modern aspects of Maasai life in Tanzania. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about Maasai culinary traditions while sipping on traditional chai tea brewed over an open wood fire.
Lunch will feature a variety of delicious local dishes, and afterward, Maasai warriors will lead you along their traditional routes, pointing out medicinal plants, unique trees, animal tracks, and local wildlife.
Upon returning to the village, you’ll relax with freshly brewed coffee and cake. As the sun sets, gather with Maasai men and women for a vibrant display of traditional singing and dancing. The day concludes with a memorable BBQ buffet around the campfire, offering an unforgettable evening under the starry sky.
After breakfast, you’ll drive to Arusha National Park for a morning walking safari, heading to a vantage point where you can enjoy views of Mount Kilimanjaro. In the afternoon, you’ll explore Lake Momella by canoe and embark on a game drive. Later, immerse yourself in the local culture with an evening tour of Tengeru Village. You’ll then return to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
you also have the option to visit local schools, where you can engage with children or observe their classes for a unique cultural experience. Additionally, consider visiting an old stone quarry site developed after World War II, where over 100 Polish refugees were settled in Arusha.
After breakfast, we’ll head along a rough road to Lake Eyasi, another soda lake in the Rift Valley. We should arrive in the afternoon and then have the opportunity to interact with the Datoga tribe, known for their fascinating culture. A local Datoga guide will lead us through their village and share insights into their way of life.
We’ll spend the next few days exploring this arid and rugged landscape on foot. The area is home to the Hadzabe, also known as the Hadzabe or Watindiga, a small group of bushmen who continue to live traditionally. They hunt with bows and arrows and gather roots, tubers, and wild fruits much like humans did 10,000 years ago.
Another intriguing tribe in the region is the Datoga, also referred to as the Barabaig or Mang’ati. Historically, they have had rivalries with the Maasai over grazing lands.
Wake up early at 6:00 AM for a morning hunting tour with the Bushmen. After the tour, return to the lodge for breakfast. Following breakfast, you’ll head to the Ngorongoro Crater. As you enter the crater, you’ll likely spot some wildlife along the way. There will be a brief stop at one of the viewpoints on the crater rim to take in the stunning views. In the late evening, you’ll drive back to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, you’ll head to Lake Manyara National Park for a full day of game driving. Enjoy lunch in the park before traveling to Mto wa Mbu for a cultural tour and biking experience. In the evening, you’ll drive back to Arusha and be dropped off at the airport for your departure home.
Lake Manyara is an excellent introduction to Tanzania’s birdlife, with over 400 species recorded. Even a first-time visitor might spot around 100 different birds in a single day. Inland from the floodplain, a belt of acacia woodland is home to Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions and impressive tusked elephants.
The cultural program in Mto wa Mbu Village offers a vibrant glimpse into traditional village life. You’ll have the chance to explore the area, sample Tanzanian cuisine, and engage in authentic cultural interactions through various community projects and activities.
